Deerfield Township Fire Rescue Department

Battalion Chief

Doug Koch

Doug currently holds the rank of Battalion Chief with over 30 years full-time fire service including 30 years of volunteer and full-time service to Deerfield Township. He is in charge of the Emergency Medical Services administering Paramedic level service to Deerfield Township. Other duties include being the HIPAA Privacy Officer, Continuing Education Program Coordinator for Deerfield under the auspices of the Ohio Department of Public Safety, Division of EMS, and Paramedic Instructor as well as being the Unit 3 Battalion Chief. He has been trained as a Haz Mat Technician, Ice Rescue Instructor as well as river and open water rescue.

Doug’s family moved to Deerfield in 1958 where he was raised and attended the Kings Schools graduating in 1975. He has 4 daughters and 3 grandchildren (soon to be 5 grandkids). Other interests include traveling, motorcycles and scuba diving.

Doug started his career in 1978 as a volunteer with the Mason Volunteer Fire Co. which contracted services to both the City of Mason and Deerfield Twp.  He was assigned to the Landen firehouse. In January of 1979 he was hired as one of the first five full-time firefighters for Deerfield Township. In that same year, he became certified as a Paramedic and a fire inspector as well as completing the required 200 hr firefighting course. He helped to establish the Fire Department’s first Paramedic service in 1980 and responded to the first paramedic run dispatched upon inception of this service.

Doug left Deerfield as a career employee (staying on in a volunteer capacity) in 1980 to work for the Blue Ash Fire Department as a Firefighter/Paramedic which was just establishing its Paramedic service. In 1989, he left Blue Ash Fire to work for Colerain Township Fire which was establishing their first Paramedic service.  He served as a Lieutenant until coming back “home” in 1997 to the Mason Deerfield Joint Fire District where he served as a Captain at the Landen Firehouse until the dissolution of the District in 1998. Hired once again by Deerfield Township as a Battalion Chief, Doug currently plans to finish his career in the near future where he started this “truly amazing and satisfying” career in one of the greatest communities in the Tri-state.
